A shortage of storage space in cabinets seems to be a common problem in many households. No matter how much storage we already have, there is always a need for more places to stash our stuff. One of the problems I am often called upon to solve for my clients is to help them to find and organize more storage space in their home. Sometimes it takes a pair of fresh eyes to see the storage possibilities in your home.
One of the most often overlooked storage opportunities is the wall space and those little nooks and oddly shaped unused spaces. When I work with clients to organize and maximize their storage space, I look for irregular walls, nooks and crannies, unused corners, and space underneath the stairs as possible options for creating more storage space.
One possibility for saving space, especially in a small den is to hang the TV on the wall. The newer TVs are relatively light in weight and work nicely with the correct wall mount hardware, saving the space, which a TV stand would occupy. A little serendipity and an eye for finding a variety of storage possibilities is what it takes to make best use of possible storage space.
I grew up in an old house with very little in the way of built-in storage, so finding storage space where none exists comes natural. Ideally, the storage will be as attractive as it is functional. One of the simplest means of adding storage with a small footprint is to add bookcases or shelving with adjustable shelves. You might be surprised at how much you can store in a tall shelf unit. A bookcase that is just 12 inches deep can hold most sizes of books. A 15-inch deep bookcase will hold many other items as well; however, a 21-inch deep bookcase will take up a larger footprint and not hold a lot more than a more shallow depth bookcase will hold.
